Potential paper topic
It's pretty simple. I think I'll just do a paper comparing and contrasting the roles technology plays in WALL-E and Stanley Kubrick's 2001. I think I mentioned this some time a while back, and I still like the idea. Any thoughts/ suggestions for things you think I should mention?

I think its a wonderful idea, and I totally forgot about WALL-E. But I remember you talking about it, and I think it is a perfect idea.
ReplyDeleteAs for suggestions, I am plumb(sp?) out of any to the extent of deficit such that I am in need of some. haha.
The Axiom's computer and HAL 9000 are two obvious points of comparison. But WALL-E himself has some points in common with HAL 9000: acting increasingly humanlike, interpreting its mission mandate somewhat broadly, attempting to bond with human astronauts, etc. You also could compare the resortlike habitat of the Axiom and the various space habitats in 2001: the Pan Am shuttle, the space station, the Discovery One. On a larger point, is technology in both movies something to be embraced and/or overcome and/or transcended?
ReplyDeleteYou could perhaps also compare Wall-E's seeming lack of any sort of religious or supernatural theme with the way the supernatural permeates 2001.
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea. Technology might be a good concept to use in your paper. From what I remember in 2001, technology was used as a tool to move the story forward througout the whole movie (sorry I haven't read the book yet!).
