Kessel's Stories

I thought the stories were good this week. I probably enjoyed "The Juniper Tree" the most, with "Stories for Men" coming in at a close second.

I was a little surprised at Roz's reaction when Eva decided to make a clone of Carey. I would not expect her to be so gung ho about the idea instantly. I also don't think I could ever replace a deceased family member or friend with a clone. A pet? Possibly. But regardless of whether or not the cloned human has the same memories and is ignorant as to what happened, it just wouldn't be the same.

Also, remember how I couldn't think of that certain literary device that started with an 'm' a few weeks ago? No? Well, it is called a MacGuffin, and you can read about it at Wikipedia here. I think I was wanting to use the term to describe the science fiction aspect in "Hellfire at Twilight."

  1. I think that Roz was thinking/wishing that a clone of Carey would make everything better. Basically so that she wouldn't have to feel guilty anymore.

I'm not sure I would want a clone replacement either, but then again I haven't had a close family member die so I don't really know what that really felt like.

I think a pet clone might be a wee bit creepy too to be honest.

  2. Haha. Spending millions of dollars and testing ethics to bring back Fido might be a little too much, even for a beloved pet.

It was cool however the science Kessel tried to put behind the cloning process. Quantum mechanics is confusing enough at the molecular level, so Kessel just skipped right over it. If you could measure things small enough (like really really small) then you could theoretically get around the uncertainty principle.

  3. It was kind of ironic that the very process that killed Carey should also being him back to life--sticking him into the nutrition grinder and bringing him out of the atomic reassembler.

But it's not surprising Roz was ok with cloning Carey, she's a teenager and when you're at the stage of life the quickest answer often seems likely the best one.
