Upon closer reading, there may be an element of fantasy with regard to the snake; in Paradise Lost, which is heavily referenced and paralleled in this story, the serpent precipitates the fall of man; whereas in Snake Girl, the snake (appropriately named Lucifer) somewhat facilitates the breakdown of the protagonists' relationship.
I couldn't find any, either. Maybe we were supposed to assume that she could talk to the snake?
