Sex without meaning

As I read these stories, sex and love seemed to come up a fair amount. I couldnt help but think (and notice on occassion) that the lack of value or meaning to sex would cause society to turn into a dystopia of sorts.

Perhaps it is not a big enough problem to cause a collapse of society, but I certainly wouldnt want to live in a society without love. What makes love with a partner different from any other close relationship. Its the physical intimacy. If you take away that, then there is nothing special about anyone. There is no love. And without love, what is the point of doing anything? Also, without a loving household, children are statistically more likely to have problems themselves.

So, I dunno, I feel like society would be entirely hollowed out without the component of love.

Also... STD's would be rampant. And even with their nanobots, clearly retroviruses (like HIV for example) are still a problem and thus STDs would still be a problem.

Anyone else feel this way, or am I just too much of an idealist?

  1. I think I'd agree with you. Although, I don't think it's historically uncommon for a society to try and devalue and destroy certain myths that give power to one gender or the other. In the Old Testament one of the commandments God gives to Moses is to ,"not let a sorceress live" probably alluding to some of the maternal religions of the time. Also, in the Roman Empire many of the mystery religions that were more maternal in nature were wiped out, and the goddesses of such religions were stripped of their femininity (ever wonder why Athena came directly from Zeus?)

I think that's the underlying problem with the Sisters in these stories. They're basically doing the same things as all the old patriarchies did, devaluing the myths that make a certain gender more than a biological tool.

In retrospect, I don't know if any of this made a lick of sense.

  2. It's weird imagining a society without love, cause i agree, it'd be hard to give a crap about anything without it. If i didnt love my family and didnt give a crap what they thought, i'd probably just be out in the woods bumming it up to the max instead of trying hard out here.

On the other hand...there is an allure to the society of cousins' style. Bleh, then again, it's the perfect example of "Too Much of A Good Thing"
