The Yiddish Policemen's Union

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book. I really liked how things were revealed, and that everything tied together at the end. And I loved the setting and the dark feel of the story. It felt real, and the actions of the characters made sense based on what their world is like. But at the same time, it was kind of difficult for me to get into at first. I think part of that was that I had to get used to the language and keep track of the names. It's very different from anything that I've read. Overall, I do think I enjoyed it.

  1. I also had a bit of difficulty getting used to the linguistic style, but once I became comfortable with the Yiddish jargon, it really helped me become more immersed in the narrative.

  2. My favorite alternative history that I have read would be Philip Roth's "The Plot Against America." I feel like themes of mystery and alternative history compete for too much attention in "The Yiddish Policeman's Union." I still really enjoyed the novel however. It makes me wonder, what is it about the nature of work that is able to drive some people mad while saving others from committing suicide?
